Battleship Adventure - The Program
Imagine your group walking onto the Battleship New Jersey or your local
battleship. They're
greeted by 1940's music playing in the background and a slideshow from
that era is playing on the screen. Each person dons a baseball hat and
is told that the year is 1944, and they are all a part of the Navys
Special Forces. Their mission is to go ashore, prepare the beaches for
invasion, and dismantle the enemy's communications towers. They'll need
to plan well and work together to succeed. If you're looking for
something different that nobody has ever done before...and you want to
go someplace unique... this is what you've been looking for.*
Teams of six participants have many decisions to make in their planning
process. As play continues, teams acquire new information that rewards
flexibility and inter-team collaboration. Unexpected events cause teams
to improvise, adapt, and work with other teams to accomplish objectives.
They'll need to plan well and communicate effectively to succeed. This
high impact, participative team building simulation requires effective
collaboration, leadership, planning and communication. Participants
learn that every person contributes to overall group effectiveness, as
the parallels between their actions during the exercise and their
behaviors on-the-job are highlighted.
Key success factors include:
-
Planning is paramount. Teams must coordinate their efforts with fellow
team members to achieve their goals.
-
Teamwork is critical. Teams benefit by collaborating between groups.
-
Effective communication makes the difference between organization and
confusion.
-
Participants are rewarded for moderate risk-taking, while excessive
aggressiveness, competitiveness, and secrecy with other teams negatively
impact results.
-
Flexibility is essential. New information throughout the exercise must
be integrated into the existing plan.
The Setting
Although this program can be
conducted anywhere, our premier locations are Battleships throughout the
United States. For example, one prime location is aboard the Battleship New
Jersey in Camden, New Jersey, across the Delaware River from
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. As the most decorated battleship ever in the
U.S. Navy, the ship has been beautifully restored and enjoys a place of
prominence as one of the river's premier attractions. The Battleship New Jersey was launched on
December 7, 1942, at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard and participated in
World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War as well as other
conflicts around the world.
*Please note: Battleship Adventure is
a fast-paced, interactive team exercise. But don't worry, the action
takes place at tables within an enclosed area on the deck of the
battleship. No weapons. No violence. Just fun and learning! You'll have
a blast!

Add-Ons
Extend
your half-day of training to a full day by helping your team members
understand each other (and themselves) better by learning about their
personalities and styles. The personality work uses the DISC instrument
to enlighten team members with new insights about themselves and how
they operate with others. A wonderful addition to the Battleship
Adventure session:

Team Building Program:
Ken Blackwell
was awesome! He did an excellent job of getting everyone involved. We
have an extremely diverse team. With that in mind, I wasn't sure what
kind of plan we could come up with that would be both beneficial and
interesting to everyone. It seemed effortless for Ken. From the
ice-breaker to the closing, Ken had us totally engaged. Everyone said
that this was by far the best off-site they had experienced. I would
have to say that that was largely due to Ken. Keep up the good work! Vicki Webb
